Mindset story: Can a rope hold back a full-grown elephant

One day a man was visiting the circus with his family. As he went to buy some food for them he went pass a huge elephant. Suddenly he stops as he was confused by the fact that this huge creature was being held by only a small rope tied to his front leg and the other end of the rope was tied to a small stick in the ground. There were no chains and no cages. It was obvious that the elephant could, at any time, break away but for some reason, he didn’t. The men keep asking himself “How can a small rope hold back such a strong animal.”

As the man was looking at the elephant all shocked the trainer of the elephant came by. The man quickly asked why is this animal just standing there and not attempting to get away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. »This animal could at any time break free but because it believed that it couldn’t, it was stuck right where it was.«
