Story about communication: A father daughter talk about life
A merchant wanted to protect his daughter from shame as all fathers want to. When he realized she had come to that age when boys become interested in more than just being friends he took her aside and started his father daughter talk. “My daughter, wicked and slippery are the ways of men in this world, and you must exercise the greatest care if you are not to bring disgrace on yourself and your family.”
Now that he had his daughter’s attention, he continued, “Men are after only one thing, are exceedingly devious, and will stop at nothing to fulfill their lustful desires. I want only to keep you from harm and disgrace. So listen carefully to what I am going to tell you, so you will know how to protect yourself when the time comes.”
“At first a man will admire and praise your beauty and charms. Then he will flatter you, and invite you to spend time with him. The next thing is that he will walk you by his house, as if by chance, and remember he has something important inside that he needs to fetch. And of course, he will invite you to come in while he looks for it. While you are waiting he will offer you a seat and, as if out of politeness, something to drink in order to refresh yourself. Now he sits down next to you, and you listen to music together. And when the moment is right, he makes his move. He forces himself on top of you, and in this way are you violated, you and your family shamed, and our reputation ruined.”
The daughter was much impressed by this forceful and passionate speech of her father. She took serious notice of it and resolved never to bring shame upon herself or her family.
Sometime later she approached her father with reverence. “Are you a magician?” she inquired. “Everything was just as you predicted. First, he admired me, then he invited me out. Next, the dear boy took me by his house from which he needed something from his bedside cupboard. Of course, he invited me inside so I wouldn’t have to wait outside alone, and once inside his apartment he offered me a drink, just as you had said. Then we listened to some soothing, relaxing music. But all this time I remembered your words, and I knew exactly what was about to happen. So let me tell you how I am worthy to be your daughter.”
“Just when I felt the right moment coming and he was about to make his move, I forced myself on top of him, and in this way, I violated him, shamed him and his family, and ruined their reputation.”
Moral of the story:
- When giving instructions be sure the person you give them to understands them, the way you understand them. If you are not sure if you are on the same page make them repeat the instructions.
- On the other hand, if you are not sure about the instructions you received repeat them yourself to make sure if you understood them correctly. Better to ask then do the wrong thing.
