Story about change: Two ants, sacks of sugar and salt and a life lesson
Once upon a time, in a large bustling marketplace, there were two ants who lived in very different homes. One ant lived in a sack of salt, nestled among the sharp and tiny crystals. The other ant lived in a sack of sugar, surrounded by soft and sweet granules. One day, the sugar-fed ant decided to visit her friend in the sack of salt. As soon as she entered, she took a bite of the salt and immediately recoiled. The taste was harsh and bitter, nothing like the sweetness she was used to. She turned to her friend and expressed her thoughts. “This is very strong and unpleasant!” she conveyed through her actions. “Why don’t you visit my home? I believe you might enjoy the food there much more.” The salt-fed ant, though hesitant, accepted the invitation. However, being cautious and reluctant to leave behind what she had always known, she decided to take a single grain of salt with her. She held it tightly in her mouth as she traveled to the sack of sugar. Upon arriving, she looked around at the sparkling white sugar crystals. The sugar-fed ant encouraged her to take a taste, and so she did. But to her surprise, she found no difference between this and the salt she was accustomed to. “I don’t see what you mean,” she signaled. “This food tastes just like mine. I don’t find it special at all.”
The sugar-fed ant watched her friend carefully and then noticed the small grain of salt still held tightly in her mouth. She gently advised her, “Perhaps you are not experiencing the sugar’s true taste because you are holding on to what you brought from your own home. Let go of it, and you may find the difference.” The salt-fed ant hesitated for a moment, uncertain. Could she truly let go of what she had always known? Would she be able to trust this new experience? But finally, she decided to take the advice and spat out the grain of salt. She then took another bite of sugar, and at once, her tiny eyes widened in astonishment. This was something entirely new! The taste was sweet, pleasant, and nothing like the salt she had always consumed. For the first time, she realized that her view of food and perhaps even life had been shaped by what she carried with her. From that day forward, the salt-fed ant never returned to the sack of salt. She had discovered a new way of experiencing the world, all because she had been willing to let go of her old ways and embrace something different.
Moral of the story:
- To move on you have to let go of your past habits, beliefs, and way of thinking.
- You can't expect different results doing the same thing over and over again.
