Mindset story: The tightrope story about walking the walk
In the middle of the 1800s, there lived a man whose name became legendary across the world. This was Jean François Gravelet and was better known as “The Great Blondin.” He was a fearless tightrope walker, a man who defied gravity with every step, known for his incredible feats of balance and daring. His most famous challenge? Crossing the mighty Niagara Falls on a thin rope, suspended high above the roaring waters below. People traveled from near and far to witness this breathtaking spectacle. They gathered in large crowds, their hearts pounding as they watched Blondin perform. He was not just a man who walked on a rope, he was a showman, a master of suspense, and he knew how to captivate his audience. One day, as the crowd swelled with excitement, Blondin stepped forward, his arms outstretched, and addressed them: “I am The Great Blondin! Who believes that I can cross over Niagara Falls on this tightrope?” The audience erupted with cheers and applause. “We believe, Blondin! We believe!” they cried, eager to see the thrilling act unfold.
Blondin smiled and reached into his pocket, pulling out a handkerchief. With a dramatic flourish, he tied it over his eyes, completely blindfolding himself. He turned back to the crowd, his voice ringing through the air: “I am The Great Blondin! Who believes that I can cross over Niagara Falls on this tightrope while blindfolded?” The crowd, now more excited than ever, responded even louder, their voices echoing in unison: “We believe, Blondin! We believe!” Blondin then revealed his next daring twist. He pulled away a sheet that had been covering a wheelbarrow. He pointed to it and proclaimed, “I am The Great Blondin! Who believes I can cross over Niagara Falls on this tightrope, blindfolded, while pushing this wheelbarrow?” The people could hardly contain themselves. They jumped, they shouted, they cheered. “We believe, Blondin! We believe!” The enthusiasm was electrifying, their confidence in him unwavering. Blondin let the crowd settle for a moment before raising his hand for silence. Then, he spoke once more, his voice calm but powerful: “I am The Great Blondin! Now… who among you will get into the wheelbarrow?” And suddenly, silence fell over the crowd. People glanced at one another, their excitement fading into hesitation. They had just chanted their belief in his abilities, yet now, when asked to truly put their faith in him, no one stepped forward. Eyes darted around, but not a single person was willing to take that risk.
Moral of the story:
- As did the people in the story cheer before the last question, so will the people in your life, until you ask something really important to you of them… something that will make them invest something of theirs to you. That is how you find out who is really there for you and who is not.
- In business many times the employees are too afraid to speak up to their bosses because trust is not established between them. Because of it employees only say what they think their bosses want to hear.
