Mindset story: A simple lesson of "The Law of the Garbage Truck"
One bright morning, a man rushed out of his house in a panic. His heart pounded as he checked the time and realized he had overslept! He was supposed to be at the airport in less than an hour, and if he missed his flight, it would ruin his entire schedule. Frantically waving down a taxi, he jumped into the back seat and barely gave the driver a chance to greet him before blurting out, “I’m in a huge hurry! I overslept, and I need to get to the airport as fast as possible. Money is not an issue, just step on it!” The taxi driver, a calm and experienced man, simply nodded, pulled away from the curb, and began driving. But instead of speeding recklessly through traffic, he followed the rules as he always did. The passenger tapped his foot impatiently. “Come on, faster!” he muttered under his breath, watching the minutes tick away. As they cruised down the street, a black car suddenly lunged out of a parking spot, cutting right in front of them! The taxi driver slammed on the brakes, tires screeching as the car skidded to a stop, just inches away from a nasty crash.
Before the passenger could catch his breath, the driver of the black car turned his head and started shouting angrily, throwing his hands in the air as if the near accident had been their fault. His face twisted with frustration as he continued yelling from his window. The passenger clenched his fists. “Unbelievable! That guy almost crashed into us, and now he’s blaming you? What a jerk!” But to his surprise, the taxi driver simply smiled and waved at the angry man before calmly continuing on his way. The passenger was shocked. “Why did you just do that? This guy nearly wrecked your car and could’ve sent us to the hospital! Why didn’t you yell back?” At that moment, the taxi driver pulled over for a moment and turned to his passenger. With a wise smile, he said, “Let me teach you something that has changed my life. I call it “The Law of the Garbage Truck.” The taxi driver explained, “You see, many people are like garbage trucks. They go around all day carrying frustration, anger, and disappointment. Just like a garbage truck collects trash, these people collect negativity—bad experiences, stress, and things that didn’t go their way. As their garbage piles up, they eventually need somewhere to dump it. And sometimes, they dump it on you.”
The passenger listened intently, his frustration slowly turning into curiosity. The driver continued, “But here’s the thing. You don’t have to take their garbage. If someone dumps their anger or frustration on you, don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Otherwise, their garbage becomes your garbage, and then you end up spreading it to others at work, at home, or to complete strangers.” The man in the back seat sat quietly, thinking about what he had just heard. He realized how often he let other people’s bad moods ruin his own. How many times had he carried someone else’s negativity with him, only to pass it on to his colleagues, family, or friends? He nodded slowly. “I never thought about it that way. But it makes sense.” The taxi driver chuckled. “Trust me, once you start practicing this, life becomes a lot lighter. Less stress, more peace.”
When they finally arrived at the airport, the man hurried to the check-in counter, still thinking about “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. As he reached the counter, a stressed-out airline worker snapped at him for arriving so late. “You’re cutting it really close! You should’ve been here earlier!” For a moment, the man felt his temper flare. His old self would have snapped back, blaming traffic, his alarm clock, or even the taxi driver for not speeding. But then he remembered “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. Instead of getting angry, he simply smiled and said, “I understand, I’ll hurry up. Thank you for helping me.” The worker, surprised by his calmness, sighed and nodded. “Alright, let’s get you checked in quickly.” As he walked to his gate, the man realized something amazing. By not accepting someone else’s negativity, he had actually helped calm the situation instead of making it worse. From that day on, he tried his best to follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. Whenever someone was rude, impatient, or angry, he reminded himself, It’s their garbage, not mine. He smiled, waved, and moved on. And just as the taxi driver had promised, life became much lighter.
Moral of the story:
- Life is full of people carrying their own frustrations, disappointments, and negativity. They might be rude to you, impatient, or unfair. But remember, you don’t have to take their garbage. Let it go. Don’t let someone else’s negativity ruin your day. Keep your peace, and you’ll find that your own happiness stays intact, no matter what happens around you.
- Be aware that the energy and attitude you put out in your environment will grow. And sooner or later that is what you are going to get back.
