Mindset story: Can a rope hold back a full-grown elephant
One bright afternoon, a man visited the circus with his family. The air was filled with the sweet scent of popcorn and cotton candy, and the excited chatter of children blended with the distant sounds of performing animals. It was a place of wonder, where people came to witness the impossible, such as the fearless acrobats flying through the air, magicians performing mind-boggling tricks, and animals doing things one would never expect. As the man wandered through the circus grounds, buying food for his family, something unusual caught his eye. A massive elephant stood calmly near the tent, its powerful body towering over everything around it. The sheer size of the creature was intimidating, it was an animal that could uproot trees with its strength, yet there it stood, motionless, tied to a small wooden stake in the ground by nothing more than a thin rope. The man stopped in his tracks, staring in confusion. He could not understand how such a mighty creature was being held by something so weak. The elephant didn’t struggle. It didn’t try to move. It simply stood there, swaying slightly, as if it had accepted its situation.
His curiosity got the better of him. As he stood there, deep in thought, the elephant’s trainer approached. The man wasted no time and asked the question that had been bothering him, “This elephant is enormous. Why doesn’t it break free? That rope is far too weak to hold it back.” The trainer smiled as if he had answered this question many times before. With a patient voice, he explained, “When they are very young and much smaller, we use this same size rope to tie them. At that age, it’s enough to hold them back. They struggle at first, pulling and tugging, trying to break free. But eventually, they learn that they can’t. They come to believe that the rope is stronger than they are. So as they grow bigger and stronger, that belief stays with them. Even though they now have the strength to snap the rope like a twig, they never try. They are trapped, not by the rope, but by their own minds.” The man was astonished. He looked back at the elephant, realizing that its captivity wasn’t physical, it was mental. The elephant thought it was still powerless, so it never even considered testing its strength.
As the man walked away, his mind raced with thoughts. How many people, just like that elephant, were held back by invisible ropes? How many people stopped chasing their dreams because of something they were told when they were young? How many gave up after one failure, believing they weren’t good enough, strong enough, or smart enough just because someone had once told them so? The man thought about how many people go through life tied down by limiting beliefs. They let past failures, self-doubt, or the words of others convince them that they cannot succeed. But in reality, just like the elephant, they have the strength to break free at any moment. As he rejoined his family, he made a quiet promise to himself. He would no longer let past experiences define his future. He would no longer let fear hold him back. He would remind his children and everyone he met and would listen that the only true limits are the ones we place on ourselves. And with that, he walked on, not just as a man who had seen a circus elephant, but as someone who had learned one of the most important lessons of life.
Moral of the story:
- We all have that one or maybe even more habits that hold us back. But the thing is you first need to know that it is there and then that you can get "break" it. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
