Leadership story: The warriors power to control destiny
Many years ago, in the land of Japan, there was a great and respected warrior named Nobunaga. His name was known far and wide for his bravery, wisdom, and skill in leading his soldiers. But even the greatest warriors sometimes faced difficult challenges. One day, Nobunaga and his army were preparing to face a fierce enemy. This enemy had a much larger force, at least ten times the number of men Nobunaga had. His soldiers were brave, but they were also human. They felt fear in their hearts. They whispered among themselves, “How can we possibly win? They are so many, and we are so few.” Nobunaga understood their fear. He knew that skill and strategy could lead to victory, but he also knew something even more important, a warrior’s mind is his greatest weapon. Without belief, even the strongest sword becomes useless. If his soldiers did not believe they could win, they had already lost.
As they marched toward the battlefield, Nobunaga led his men to a Shinto shrine. It was a quiet place of worship, where people came to seek guidance and strength from the spirits. He gathered his soldiers and spoke with a calm but powerful voice. “Before we fight, I will enter this shrine and offer my prayers. When I return, I will toss a coin. If it lands on heads, we will win. If it lands on tails, we will lose. Destiny will decide our fate.” The soldiers stood still. They looked at each other. Some felt nervous, others hopeful. But all watched closely as their leader stepped into the shrine. Inside, Nobunaga knelt and closed his eyes. He prayed for his soldiers, for their courage, for their strength, and most of all, for their belief in themselves. He knew that what would truly determine their success was not the coin, but their hearts.
After his prayer, Nobunaga stepped out of the shrine. He held up a shiny coin so all could see. “This coin will reveal our destiny,” he said. He tossed it high into the air. The coin spun and danced in the sunlight. The soldiers held their breath. It landed with a soft sound on the ground. Heads. A cheer erupted among the men. Their fear was replaced with confidence. “We are destined to win!” they shouted. Their hearts were now full of belief and determination. With this new spirit, they marched onto the battlefield. They fought with courage, unity, and skill. Though they were outnumbered, they fought like lions. And in the end, they achieved victory. The enemy, despite their numbers, could not defeat an army that believed it was unstoppable.
After the battle, one of Nobunaga’s closest attendants approached him. He was smiling but curious. “What a miraculous coin toss, my lord. Truly, no one can change the hand of destiny.” Nobunaga smiled quietly and took out the coin. He held it up for the attendant to see. It had heads on both sides. The attendant gasped. “My lord, you… you controlled the result all along?” Nobunaga nodded. “The coin was never going to decide our fate. Our fate was decided by our belief. My soldiers needed to believe they could win. That belief gave them the strength to achieve victory.” The attendant thought deeply. “So, it was not destiny that led us to victory. It was the strength you gave their hearts.” “Exactly,” said Nobunaga. “Sometimes, the greatest battles are fought within the mind. When you believe in yourself, you unlock strength you never knew you had.”
