Inspirational story: How much is a mother's love worth? Check the bill
One evening a little boy named Billy approached his mother while she was preparing supper for the family. In his small hands, he held a neatly folded piece of paper, which he handed to her with an air of importance. His mother, curious but slightly amused, dried her hands on a kitchen towel before taking the note and unfolding it. As her eyes scanned the words, a wave of disbelief washed over her. The note contained a list, a bill of sorts, outlining the chores Billy had done and the payment he expected in return. For cutting the grass $5.00. For cleaning up my room this week $1.00. For going to the store for you $0.50. Babysitting my kid brother while you went shopping $0.25. Taking out the garbage $1.00. For getting a good report card $5.00. For cleaning up and raking the yard $2.00. Total owed $14.75.
Billy stood tall, a proud smile on his face, waiting for his mother’s reaction. At first, she felt a surge of frustration. How could her own son put a price on helping his family? She considered scolding him, maybe even refusing outright. But then, a memory surfaced, her own mother’s words from years ago. “My darling daughter, one day your child will do something you couldn’t imagine in your wildest dreams. You will feel angry, you will feel disappointed, and you even might feel unappreciated. But then you will feel something only a mother can. And that is a mother’s love. So you will forgive your child and find a way to bond even more.” Taking a deep breath, she reached for a pen, turned the paper over, and began to write her own list. She then handed the paper back to Billy, watching him as he read.
For 9 months I carried you while you were growing inside me, No Charge. For all the nights that I’ve sat up with you, taken care of your illnesses, and prayed for you, No Charge. For all the trying times, and all the tears that you’ve caused through the years, No Charge. For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were and still are ahead, No Charge. For the toys, food, clothes, changing of diapers, and even wiping your nose, No Charge. Son, I am your mother and I love you. Your health, your happiness, your smile, and your hugs are worth more than any amount of money. Thank you.
As Billy read his mother’s words, his face changed. His proud expression softened, and soon, tears welled up in his eyes. He looked up at his mother, his voice filled with emotion as he said, “Mom, I love you!” Without hesitation, he picked up the pen, turned the paper back to his original list, and with a firm stroke, drew a big X over the entire page. Below it, he wrote in large, heartfelt letters: “PAID IN FULL WITH MY MOTHER’S LOVE.” Billy learned a valuable lesson that day—one that would stay with him for the rest of his life. He realized that love, kindness, and the sacrifices of a parent could never be measured in money. And his mother, in that moment, felt the true depth of a bond that only a parent and child can share.
Moral of the story:
- A mother's love is something special. Even though everyone has heard of it, the truth is no one but mothers are able to experience it.
