Sales story: The secret for success in business is a satisfied customer
A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone that was next to the counter where the store-owner was. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits. In front of him, he spread a paper that said “A satisfied customer is the key to success!” The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation.
Boy: “Lady, Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?”
Woman: (at the other end of the phone line): “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”
Boy: “Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.”
Woman: “I’m very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting my lawn.”
Boy: “Lady, I’ll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Florida.”
Woman: “No, thank you. I am already a satisfied customer and there is no price you can offer me to make a change. Thank you and goodbye.”
With a smile on his face, the little boy thanked the lady and ended the call. The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy fascinated by what he had just heard. “Son… I like your attitude. I like that positive spirit and I would like to offer you a job.”
The boy answered, “No thanks.” The Store owner was a little bit shocked at his response and added, “But you were really pleading for one.”
“No Sir I wasn’t. I was just checking my performance at the Job I already have. You see if you have a satisfied customer no one can steal your customers no matter what they promise. And I know that because I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!”
Moral of the story:
- Have the courage to ask your customers for feedback.
- The customer is not always right. But that doesn't even matter if you provide the best customer experience the customer won't even wonder who is right because it will feel right every step of the buying journey.
