Once upon a time, there was a young man who was searching for the secret of happiness. He had heard that the wisest man on Earth possessed this knowledge, so he set out on a long journey, traveling through vast deserts, high mountains, and endless plains to find him. After many months, he finally arrived at a magnificent castle perched atop a mountain. This, he was told, was the home of the wisest man in the land. Expecting to find a quiet sage living in solitude, the young man was surprised to see a bustling, lively palace. Merchants and travelers moved about, exchanging stories and goods. Music filled the air, and the halls were lined with lavish decorations. The dining tables were adorned with an endless variety of delicious foods, and people engaged in deep conversations in every corner of the castle. The young man waited patiently for his turn to meet the wise man. When the moment finally arrived, he expressed his deep desire to learn the secret of happiness. The wise man listened attentively and then smiled.
Instead of giving an immediate answer, the wise man handed the young man a small teaspoon containing two drops of oil. He then gave him an important task. “I want you to explore my castle and admire its beauty, but as you do so, make sure not to spill the oil in the spoon. Return to me in two hours.” The young man, determined to complete the task successfully, carefully held the spoon as he walked through the vast castle. He focused entirely on the oil, making sure it did not spill. He climbed the staircases and walked through the grand halls with caution, never taking his eyes off the spoon. After two hours, he returned to the wise man. The wise man looked at him and asked, “Tell me, what did you think of my beautiful castle? Did you see the intricate Persian embroideries in the dining hall? Did you admire the garden that took my master gardener ten years to create? Did you notice the rare books and ancient parchments in my grand library?” The young man was embarrassed. He had not seen any of those things. His only focus had been on the spoon and the oil it contained. The wise man nodded and said, “Go back and explore again. This time, take in the beauty around you, and don’t think too much about the spoon in your hand.”
Eager to make up for his mistake, the young man took the spoon again and set off through the castle. He walked more freely this time, allowing himself to admire the stunning works of art on the walls, the exquisite tapestries, and the breathtaking gardens. He noticed the grand architecture, the intricate designs, and the vibrant life within the castle. He took in the fresh scent of flowers, the warmth of the sun through the grand windows, and the laughter of people sharing meals together. When he returned to the wise man, he described everything he had seen in vivid detail, feeling enlightened by the beauty he had previously ignored. The wise man listened and then asked, “And where is the oil I entrusted to you?” The young man glanced down at the spoon and realized that, in his excitement, he had spilled all the oil. The wise man smiled and said, “This is the secret of happiness. True happiness comes from experiencing all the wonders the world has to offer, from appreciating beauty, love, and joy. But at the same time, one must never forget their responsibilities, for you in this test were the drops of oil in the spoon. Balance is the key to happiness. Enjoy life, but never neglect what truly matters.”
The young man left the castle with a heart full of wisdom. He now understood that happiness was not about choosing between duty and enjoyment, but rather learning to balance both. From that day on, he lived his life appreciating every beautiful moment while also taking care of his responsibilities, ensuring that neither was forgotten.
Moral of the story:
- Don't t forget to enjoy the beauty of life, but at the same time you must not lose the sense of your responsibilities. Find the right balance.
