Story about change: A caged birds chance for freedom
Once upon a time, there was a little bird who had known nothing but the confines of its small, sturdy cage. Day after day, the bird would gaze longingly through the iron bars at the world beyond. It watched as sunlight danced upon the green meadows and as graceful trees swayed in the gentle breeze. In moments of quiet reflection, the bird would murmur to itself, “Oh, how wonderful it must be to feel the warmth of the sun on my feathers, to let the wind carry me high above the clouds, and to glide freely in the open sky!” The little bird’s heart would race with excitement at the mere thought of soaring among its free-flying kin. Standing a bit taller on its perch, it would inhale deeply, as if drawing in all the promise of the unknown. “I dream of the day when I can join them,” it would whisper, its voice filled with both hope and uncertainty. One bright morning, as the bird peered out the window, it noticed a traveler, a fellow bird with vibrant plumage landing on the window ledge. The traveler tilted its head inquisitively and regarded the caged bird with a mixture of pity and wonder. In a soft, almost melodic tone that carried beyond the glass, the traveler seemed to say, “How can you live enclosed when the sky calls your name? How do you not long for the freedom that is your birthright?”
Hearing these words, the caged bird’s heart swelled and then sank at the same time. For a while, it felt a burst of pride, imagining itself as one of the majestic birds soaring through vast blue heavens. Yet, almost as quickly, a heavy sadness would settle over its little body, and it would murmur with a trembling tone, “But what if the wide world is too great and frightening? What if I cannot survive outside this cage that has kept me safe for so long?” This inner tug-of-war continued each day as the little bird observed the playful chatter of the free birds and the warm embrace of the sun on their wings. Its thoughts turned to the possibilities that lay beyond: the rush of air under its wings, the thrill of chasing after a sparkling insect in mid-flight, and the joy of discovering unknown lands. With each passing moment, the bird would say quietly to itself, “I feel a stirring inside, a longing to taste what lies beyond these familiar bars.” One fateful day, the owner of the cage left the door of the cage ajar. The little bird’s eyes widened as it peered through the open door. Outside, it saw the wide expanse of the world: birds swooping in graceful arcs against the brilliant blue sky, the sun lighting up every corner of the earth, and the cool, inviting breeze beckoning it onward. Overwhelmed by the promise of freedom, the bird’s heart pounded with newfound hope, and it thought, “At last, an opportunity to break free! I can finally feel the wind beneath my wings!”
For a brief, shining moment, the bird considered its options with clarity and excitement. It imagined what it would be like to leave behind the safe but confining familiarity of its cage and embrace the limitless sky. However, as the day wore on and the golden light began to fade, the bird hesitated. It pondered the risks: “What if the unknown is too perilous? What if I lose the security that this cage has provided all these years?” In that moment of uncertainty, just as the sun was sinking low into the horizon, the owner returned and gently closed the cage door. With the door shut and the world of freedom hidden once more behind solid metal, the little bird’s opportunity faded like a dream at dawn. It settled back onto its perch, shoulders drooping and heart heavy, and softly lamented, “I chose the safety of these bars over the great, wide sky even though deep down, I knew I was meant to soar.”
Moral of the story:
- Your situation can change any day. All you need to do is to be willing to seize the opportunities that come.
- Fear for most is stronger than their dreams.
